What is a bullion premium?

A bullion premium is the amount paid above the raw melt value of the metal. A coin with a melt value of £30 and a sale price of £36 has a £6 premium. The premium percentage shows how far above spot the item is priced.

Premiums matter because they affect how quickly a purchase needs to rise in value before you break even.

What is a good premium?

There is no single perfect premium. Common bullion coins often trade at lower premiums than limited editions, proofs or graded coins. Gold premiums are usually lower in percentage terms than silver premiums because the underlying metal value is higher.

Condition, demand, rarity, tax status and dealer stock levels can all change the premium.

Why premiums change

Premiums can rise when demand is high, stock is low, mint supply is delayed or a particular coin becomes popular with collectors. Premiums can fall when supply improves or when buyers focus mainly on metal weight rather than collectability.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bullion premium?

A premium is the amount paid above the metal melt value.

Is a low premium always better?

Not always. Some higher premium coins may have collector demand, rarity or better resale appeal.

Why are silver premiums often higher than gold premiums?

Silver has a lower metal value per coin, so fixed minting and handling costs are larger as a percentage.

Does this calculator include VAT or postage?
