What is melt value?

Melt value is the estimated raw metal value of a coin, bar or round. It is based on the live spot price of the metal, the item weight and the purity or fineness. It does not include collector demand, condition, grading, dealer margin, VAT, postage or rarity.

For bullion stackers, melt value is useful because it gives you a baseline before judging whether a buying price or selling price is fair.

How melt value is calculated

The basic formula is: weight × purity × spot price. For example, a 1oz 999 silver coin uses one troy ounce multiplied by 0.999 and then by the live silver spot price.

Coins such as sovereigns use 22-carat gold, so their fine gold content is lower than their gross weight.

Melt value vs dealer price

Dealer prices are normally higher than melt value because they include premiums. Premiums can cover minting costs, distribution, dealer margin, market demand, scarcity, packaging and collectible value. Use the Premium Calculator after checking melt value to see how much over spot you are paying.
