A precious-metal collection can contain personal financial information: what you own, how much you hold, what you paid and what you have sold. Bullion Tracker now gives registered collectors a choice over where that collection information is kept.
BT Cloud or Private Storage
BT Cloud keeps your collection with your Bullion Tracker account. It is designed for convenience, so your collection is available when you sign in.
Private Storage keeps your individual holdings, purchase details, sales and wishlist in your browser on the device you are using, rather than storing that collection as a BT Cloud collection.
Neither option is forced on you. Existing users can continue using BT Cloud, while collectors who prefer device-based storage can choose Private Storage from Your Storage.
What stays on your device?
When Private Storage is active, the sensitive records that make up your collection stay on that device: your coin and bar holdings, quantities, purchase information, sales history and wishlist.
Bullion Tracker still supplies the public catalogue information needed to display the collection, including coin and bar records, series information and market data.
What Bullion Tracker still knows
Private Storage is a collection-privacy option, not an anonymous account. Your normal BT account information and the fact that you have selected Private Storage still remain with Bullion Tracker so you can sign in and use the service.
Private collections can also contribute to BT's community metal totals using an aggregate metal amount. This is designed so the community total can include Private Storage collectors without BT needing the underlying list of individual holdings, purchases or sales.
Reports still work
Choosing Private Storage does not mean giving up the useful parts of BT. Collection, progress, wishlist and sales continue to work, and reports can be created in your browser from the collection stored on your device.
Private Storage users can export their records in the supported CSV, Excel and PDF formats, including the full-account reports available in BT's Export & Reports area.
You can change your mind
BT includes a guided migration process for moving between BT Cloud and Private Storage. The transfer is checked before the storage mode changes, helping to avoid leaving a collection half-moved between the two options.
Moving back to BT Cloud is also a deliberate action: your device collection is uploaded as part of that migration rather than silently synchronising in the background.
Private means more responsibility too
Keeping a collection on your own device gives you greater control over that collection data, but it also means the device matters. Clearing browser or site data, losing the device or changing browser can remove access to a Private Storage collection if you do not have a backup.
For that reason, BT provides an encrypted backup and restore option and strongly recommends keeping a current backup when using Private Storage.
Privacy should be a choice
Different collectors want different things. Some value the convenience of having their collection available whenever they sign in; others would rather keep detailed holdings and purchase information on their own device.
Bullion Tracker now supports both approaches. The important part is that the collector gets to choose.
