The Sovereign 2027: A Golden Return with New Collector Editions

The Royal Mint’s 2027 Sovereign collection combines the classic St George and the dragon with fresh security features and some notable Proof releases.

The Royal Mint launched its 2027 Sovereign collection on 22 September 2026. For collectors, this year's range is about more than a new date: it includes traditional yellow-gold bullion, recycled-gold collector editions and an unusual reverse-frosted Proof finish.

Traditional yellow gold continues

Following the return to yellow gold in 2026, the 2027 bullion Sovereign retains the traditional 22-carat (916.7 fine) gold alloy. Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design appears on the reverse, opposite Martin Jennings’ portrait of King Charles III.

Security on both sides

The bullion Sovereign includes a latent image below the King’s portrait, together with a half-tone pattern and micro-text on the reverse. These features add modern anti-counterfeiting detail while retaining the familiar design.

Something different for Proof collectors

The 2027 commemorative Sovereign range is struck using recycled gold. A reverse-frosted gold Proof Sovereign also joins the range: unlike the conventional Proof treatment, its background is frosted while the raised design is polished. The Royal Mint lists a limited edition of 3,000 for the individual reverse-frosted gold Proof coin, with a maximum coin mintage of 3,310.

The Silver Sovereign returns

The collection also includes a silver Proof Sovereign, the third silver edition in the Sovereign's history according to The Royal Mint. This is a collector issue distinct from the traditional 22-carat gold bullion Sovereign.

2027 Sovereign: key bullion specifications

The standard gold bullion Sovereign is 22 carat, 22.05 mm in diameter and contains approximately 0.235 troy ounces of fine gold. The reverse was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci and the obverse by Martin Jennings.
