The 1985 1oz Gold Krugerrand is a South African bullion coin struck in the traditional 22-carat gold-copper alloy and containing one troy ounce of fine gold. It forms part of the Gold Krugerrand family, one of the most influential bullion coin programmes in the world.
The obverse carries Otto Schultz's portrait of Paul Kruger, while the reverse shows Coert Steynberg's springbok antelope, the design pairing that has defined the Krugerrand since 1967. The copper alloy gives the coin its distinctive warm colour and provides added durability for handling and long-term storage.
The 1985 issue represents the mature 1980s Krugerrand period, when the classic design was already firmly established among gold bullion buyers.
