Description

The 1996 Silver Libertad 1oz Proof Coin introduced a major redesign and a larger 40mm diameter. Winged Victory is shown standing on her pedestal, with the Mexican landscape, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl beyond. The inscriptions were repositioned around the upper portion of the design, creating the format used through 1999. Only 1,000 Proof coins were produced. As the first year of the redesigned type and one of the lowest-mintage issues of the decade, the 1996 is a significant Libertad key date.
