Description

The 1823 George IV Double Sovereign is recognised as the first Double Sovereign issued for circulation. Its one-year bare-head portrait by Jean Baptiste Merlen is unique within British coinage, while Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon appears on the reverse. The coin was struck at The Royal Mint in London and is catalogued separately from the proof issue of the same date.
