Description

The 1937 George VI Gold Double Sovereign, also denominated Two Pounds, was struck by The Royal Mint solely for the special coronation gold proof set. The obverse features Thomas Humphrey Paget's bare-head portrait of King George VI facing left, while the reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon design. No circulation Double Sovereign bearing George VI was produced. Struck in 22-carat gold to proof standard, the coin weighs approximately 15.98 grams, contains about 14.64 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 28.40 mm. The 1937 coronation proof has a plain edge rather than the milled edge associated with normal Sovereign-family coinage. A total of 5,501 complete four-coin gold proof sets were issued, with one Double Sovereign included in each set. Collectors should confirm the plain edge, original proof surfaces and provenance. Cleaning, polishing, edge alteration or removal from an impaired set can materially affect desirability and value.
