Description

The 1937 George VI Gold Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint solely for the special coronation gold proof set issued following the accession and coronation of King George VI. It is the only officially issued Sovereign to bear George VI's portrait and no circulation Sovereign was produced during his reign. The obverse features Thomas Humphrey Paget's bare-head portrait of the king facing left, while the reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon design. Struck in 22-carat gold to proof standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. Unlike normal Sovereigns, the 1937 coronation proof has a plain edge. A total of 5,501 complete four-coin gold proof sets were issued, with one Sovereign included in each set. Collectors should confirm the plain edge, original proof surfaces and provenance. Cleaning, polishing, edge alteration or removal from an impaired set can materially affect desirability and value.
