Description

The 1978 Gold Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold during the Arnold Machin portrait era of Queen Elizabeth II. It has the established full Sovereign specification of approximately 0.257 troy oz gross weight, containing around 0.2352 troy oz of fine gold, with a diameter of 22.05 mm. The obverse features Arnold Machin's second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's classic depiction of St George and the dragon. The 1978 issue forms part of the late-1970s bullion Sovereign revival and is collected as a key date within the Arnold Machin portrait sequence.
