Description

The 1976 Gold Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold during the Arnold Machin portrait era of Queen Elizabeth II. It has the established full Sovereign specification of approximately 0.257 troy oz gross weight, containing around 0.2352 troy oz of fine gold, with a diameter of 22.05 mm. The obverse features Arnold Machin's second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's classic depiction of St George and the dragon. The 1976 Sovereign was the first released Sovereign produced at The Royal Mint's Llantrisant facility in South Wales, making it an important mint-transition issue.
