Description

The 1966 Gold Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold during the first portrait era of Queen Elizabeth II. It has the established full Sovereign specification of approximately 0.257 troy oz gross weight, containing around 0.2352 troy oz of fine gold, with a diameter of 22.05 mm. The obverse features Mary Gillick's youthful laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci's classic depiction of St George and the dragon, continuing one of the most recognisable designs in British coinage. The 1966 issue belongs to the uninterrupted 1957-1968 bullion-standard run produced during the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. It is an essential date for collectors building a complete modern Sovereign sequence.
