Description

The 2000 Gold Proof Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold. It features Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and st George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci on the reverse. The 2000 issue is the first Sovereign dated for the new millennium and was produced in both proof and bullion formats following the return of regular bullion Sovereign production. The full Sovereign follows the traditional specification of 7.98 grams, a diameter of 22.05 millimetres and approximately 0.2352 troy ounces of fine gold. Specially prepared dies and planchets create the reflective fields and sharply defined relief associated with Royal Mint proof production. The coin was supplied in official Royal Mint presentation packaging and was also available within multi-coin Sovereign proof sets. Original capsules, cases, booklets and certificates may vary according to the issue format in which the coin was first sold.
