Description

The 1999 Gold Proof Sovereign was struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold. It features queen elizabeth ii fourth definitive portrait by ian rank-broadley on the obverse and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon on the reverse. It closes the proof-only sequence that preceded the return of regular bullion Sovereign production in 2000. The full Sovereign follows the traditional specification of 7.98 grams, a diameter of 22.05 millimetres and approximately 0.2352 troy ounces of fine gold. Specially prepared dies and planchets give the proof coin reflective fields and sharply defined relief. The issue was available in official Royal Mint presentation formats, including individual proof packaging and multi-coin Sovereign proof sets. Original capsules, cases and certificates may differ according to the format in which the coin was first supplied.
