Description

The 1989 Gold Proof Sovereign commemorates the 500th anniversary of the first English Sovereign struck for Henry VII in 1489. Bernard Sindall created both sides of this one-year design, replacing the normal royal portrait with Queen Elizabeth II enthroned in King Edward's Chair and replacing St George and the Dragon with the crowned Royal Arms set within a double Tudor rose. Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin retains the traditional full Sovereign specification of 7.98 grams and 22.05 millimetres, containing approximately 0.2352 troy ounces of fine gold. It was produced only to proof quality and is visually distinct from every other modern Sovereign. The coin was sold individually and as part of official three-coin and four-coin anniversary proof sets, with Royal Mint cases and certificates. Its unique design, anniversary significance and proof-only status make the 1989 issue one of the landmark Sovereigns of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
