Description

The 1982 Gold Proof Sovereign was struck in 22-carat gold and carries Arnold Machin's second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, paired with Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon reverse. It was produced alongside the final large-scale bullion Sovereign issue before regular bullion production paused for the remainder of the 1980s and most of the 1990s. Its specification remains the traditional 7.98 grams and 22.05 millimetres, containing approximately 0.2352 troy ounces of fine gold. The proof version is distinguished by its carefully prepared surfaces and sharper presentation strike. The 1982 proof was available in official Royal Mint packaging and through proof-set configurations. It represents an important transition between the years when proof and bullion Sovereigns were both available and the proof-only period that followed.
