Description

The 1979 Gold Proof Sovereign marks the beginning of The Royal Mint's continuous modern proof Sovereign programme. Struck in 22-carat gold, it carries Arnold Machin's second definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon reverse. The full Sovereign weighs 7.98 grams, measures 22.05 millimetres in diameter and contains approximately 0.2352 troy ounces of fine gold. Its specially prepared dies and polished fields distinguish it from the bullion Sovereign produced for the same date. The individual 1979 proof issue was supplied in Royal Mint presentation packaging without a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. As the first regular modern proof date, it is an important starting point for collectors assembling the annual proof Sovereign series.
