Description

The 1932 Pretoria Mint Gold Sovereign features king george v revised small-head portrait left by bertram mackennal and re-engraved st george and the dragon after benedetto pistrucci. It is identified by SA mintmark below the horse. It uses the smaller revised George V portrait introduced in 1929, together with a re-engraved and reduced St George reverse. This was the final Sovereign struck for normal circulation before production was revived in Britain after the Second World War. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. Late George V Sovereigns were produced principally by the Australian and Pretoria branch mints after regular London circulation production had ended. Collectors catalogue George V Sovereigns by year, mint and portrait type. Wear, strike, surface quality, authenticity and mintmark clarity can materially affect desirability and value.
