Description

The 1928 Melbourne Mint Gold Sovereign features king george v large bare-head portrait left by bertram mackennal and st george and the dragon by benedetto pistrucci. It is identified by M mintmark below the horse. It uses the original larger George V portrait employed on Sovereigns from 1911 through 1928. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. Late George V Sovereigns were produced principally by the Australian and Pretoria branch mints after regular London circulation production had ended. Collectors catalogue George V Sovereigns by year, mint and portrait type. Wear, strike, surface quality, authenticity and mintmark clarity can materially affect desirability and value.
