Description

The 1918 Bombay Mint Gold Sovereign features King George V's bare-head portrait facing left by Bertram Mackennal and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon reverse. It is identified by I mintmark in the ground below the dragon. This was the only year in which full Sovereigns were struck at the Bombay branch mint, making the I-mintmark issue a distinctive one-year type. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. George V Sovereigns retained the established Sovereign specification while production shifted increasingly to branch mints during and after the First World War. Collectors catalogue George V Sovereigns by year and mint. Wear, strike, surface quality, authenticity and mintmark clarity can materially affect desirability and value.
