Description

The 1911 London Mint Gold Sovereign is the recognised Coronation proof issue of King George V. It features Bertram Mackennal's bare-head portrait of the king facing left and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon reverse. It carries no mintmark and is distinguished from the normal London currency issue by its brilliant proof finish. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. The 1911 proof Sovereign was issued for George V's Coronation-year proof sets and is catalogued separately from the circulating London Sovereign. Collectors should confirm original proof surfaces, strike quality and provenance because cleaning, polishing or altered surfaces can materially affect desirability and value.
