Description

The 1899 Perth Mint Gold Sovereign features Queen Victoria's Old Head, also known as the Veiled Head or Widow Head, by Sir Thomas Brock and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon reverse. It is identified by P mintmark below the horse. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. The Old Head portrait was introduced in 1893 and remained on Victoria Sovereigns through 1901. Collectors catalogue Old Head Sovereigns by year and mint.
