Description

The 1891 London Mint Gold Sovereign in this record is the recognised rare short-tail reverse variety of Queen Victoria's Jubilee Head Sovereign. The obverse carries Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm's crowned portrait of Victoria, introduced for the Golden Jubilee coinage of 1887, while the reverse uses Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon design. Most 1891 London Jubilee Head Sovereigns use the later long-tail reverse. This specialist variety instead retains the earlier short-tail reverse associated with the 1887-1890 type, making accurate reverse attribution essential. London-struck Sovereigns carry no mintmark. Struck in 22-carat gold, the full Sovereign weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and measures about 22.05 mm in diameter. Authentication should rely on clear examination of the horse's tail, die details, weight and dimensions, ideally against a recognised specialist reference.
