Description

The 1887 Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign features Queen Victoria's Jubilee Head portrait by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm and Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon reverse. This issue uses the earlier short-tail reverse used for the Jubilee Head series from 1887 to 1890. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. It is identified by S mintmark below the horse. The Jubilee Head was introduced in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and remained in use on Sovereigns through 1893. Collectors catalogue Jubilee Head Sovereigns by year, mint and recognised reverse type.
