Description

The 1885 Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign belongs to the Victoria Young Head St George series introduced in 1871. William Wyon’s portrait appears on the obverse, while Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design carries the date on the reverse. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. This Sydney issue is identified with S mintmark below the portrait. The St George type was produced alongside shield Sovereigns for a number of dates, so reverse and mint must both be recorded to identify the genuine issue correctly. Collectors follow the series by date, mint and major varieties. Strike quality, wear, surface marks and accurate mintmark attribution have a strong influence on desirability.
