Description

The 1872 Melbourne Mint Gold Sovereign in this record is the recognised 1872 over 1871 variety of the Victoria Young Head St George type. The obverse uses William Wyon’s portrait and the reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. It is identified by M mintmark below the portrait together with the diagnostic overdate and, where stated, the presence or absence of Pistrucci’s B.P. initials. This is a specialist catalogue variety rather than a separate annual issue. Authentication should rely on clear magnified examination and comparison with established numismatic references.
