Description

The 1872 Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign combines Queen Victoria’s Young Head portrait with the crowned shield reverse. The S mintmark identifies production at the Sydney branch of The Royal Mint. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. Australian branch-mint Sovereigns were struck from locally sourced gold using dies prepared under Royal Mint authority. The shield reverse remained popular in Australia and continued there after London had moved toward the St George type. Collectors catalogue these coins separately by year, mint and reverse. The mintmark, portrait details and reverse style should be checked carefully because the same date may also exist with a St George reverse or from another mint.
