Description

The 1870 London Mint Gold Sovereign features William Wyon’s celebrated Victoria Young Head portrait and Jean Baptiste Merlen’s crowned shield of the Royal Arms. This record represents the large head portrait. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. London-struck coins carry no mintmark. On the shield type the date appears below Victoria’s portrait, while the reverse is framed by a wreath and carries the crowned royal arms. Victoria shield Sovereigns are collected by date, portrait development and major recognised varieties. Condition, originality and accurate attribution are especially important for scarcer dates and named variants.
