Description

The 1868 Sydney Mint Sovereign is part of Australia’s first official gold-coin series. It uses the distinctive Type II colonial design rather than the standard London shield or St George reverse. The obverse shows Queen Victoria with a banksia wreath, while the reverse names SYDNEY MINT and AUSTRALIA around the denomination ONE SOVEREIGN. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. The Sydney issues were produced from locally mined Australian gold and form a separate, highly collectable chapter of the wider Sovereign family. Collectors distinguish the 1855–1856 Type I portrait from the revised Type II portrait used from 1857 to 1870. Date, grade, surface quality and correct type attribution can all have a major effect on value.
