The 1859 London Mint Gold Sovereign represented by this record is the recognised Ansell Hairband variety of the Victoria Young Head shield series. It pairs William Wyon’s portrait with Jean Baptiste Merlen’s crowned shield reverse. Struck as a full Sovereign in 22-carat gold, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams, contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold and has a nominal diameter of 22.05 mm. London issues have no mintmark.
