Description

The 1837 Gold Sovereign was struck during the short reign of King William IV. The obverse carries William Wyon's second bare-head portrait of the king, paired with Jean Baptiste Merlen's crowned shield of the Royal Arms on the reverse.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. No full Sovereign was issued for 1834, so the dated run moves from 1833 directly to 1835. The final 1837 issue closes William IV's Sovereign coinage before the first Victorian coins appeared in 1838.\n\nCollectors value William IV Sovereigns for their short run, distinctive shield reverse and strong connection to the work of William Wyon.
