Description

The 1832 Gold Sovereign with the first bust of King William IV forms part of the short coinage of the Sailor King. William Wyon's bare-head portrait appears on the obverse, while Jean Baptiste Merlen's crowned shield of the Royal Arms continues the heraldic reverse tradition.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. The first-bust portrait is recognised as a distinct type from the revised second portrait also encountered for this date.\n\nWilliam IV Sovereigns are keenly collected because the reign produced only a short run of dates. Correct portrait attribution is especially important for 1831 and 1832, where both major bust types are recorded.
