Description

The 1828 Gold Sovereign belongs to the second design period of King George IV's reign. William Wyon's bare-head portrait appears on the obverse, paired with Jean Baptiste Merlen's crowned shield of the Royal Arms on the reverse.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. This type replaced the earlier laureate portrait and St George reverse during 1825 and continued until the end of George IV's coinage.\n\nThese coins are collected both as individual dates and as part of the complete 1825-1830 shield-back run. Preservation, surface quality and the strength of the strike can make a substantial difference to collector appeal.
