Description

The second major 1825 Gold Sovereign type introduced William Wyon's bare-head portrait of King George IV and Jean Baptiste Merlen's crowned shield of the Royal Arms. It marked a complete visual break from the laureate portrait and St George reverse used earlier in the reign.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. The shield-back type continued through the remaining circulating Sovereigns of George IV and established a heraldic reverse tradition later continued under William IV and early Queen Victoria.\n\nBecause two substantially different Sovereigns carry the date 1825, collectors should identify the portrait and reverse rather than relying on the year alone.
