Description

The 1822 Gold Sovereign is an early George IV issue using Benedetto Pistrucci's laureate portrait of the king and his revised St George and the dragon reverse. The George IV version removed the surrounding Garter inscription used on the first George III Sovereigns and shows St George armed with a sword.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. These laureate-head coins form the first major design period of George IV's Sovereigns and are distinct from the bare-head and shield-back type introduced during 1825.\n\nCollectors follow this issue by date, condition and die characteristics. Well-preserved examples are particularly desirable because many surviving coins show circulation wear or contact marks.
