Description

The 1818 Gold Sovereign belongs to the first four-year run of the revived modern Sovereign under King George III. The obverse carries Pistrucci's classical laureate portrait of the king, while the reverse presents the original St George and the dragon composition introduced in 1817.\n\nStruck in 22-carat gold to the established full-Sovereign standard, the coin weighs approximately 7.98 grams and contains about 7.32 grams of fine gold. The early George III design is distinguished from later Sovereigns by details including the Garter inscription surrounding the reverse scene and the first treatment of St George with a broken spear.\n\nCollectors regard the George III issues as the foundation of the modern Sovereign series.
